After running build.xml

Brendan Vogt
Hi,

I managed to get build.xml to run, and it looks fine.  Is there a way in
which I can see the log file to see if an exception was thrown any where?

I ran ant run-install.  But when I go to the online documentation they say I
must run it with seed or demo.  Am I too late for this?  Should I still do
because I opened 1 of the user tables and it seems there is data already in
it.

What do I do after this?  Is it time to open the project in Eclipse yet?

Brendan

ant run-install is what you want for the time being.  It populates the
database with demo data so you can play with it.

When you are done, and ready to load your own data, run

ant clean-all
ant run-install-seed

Hen do I actually open the whole project in Eclipse.  After running the
build.xml for the first time, what's next?

Re:using Eclipse was After running build.xml

BJ Freeman
open the project in eclipe.
right click on build.xml and do a run as Ant Build.
this will rebuild any jars that have been changes.
if you have the plugin for svn in eclipse you can use that to update you
files.

I have two check outs
1) for the trunk
2) for the ver 4.0

RE: After running build.xml

In reply to this post by Brendan Vogt
You can open it in Eclipse any time you want, even while it is running.
Eclipse is opening the java files and the jvm is running the jar files.

"After running the build.xml for the first time, what's next?" Hmmm, depends
on what you want to do next.

If you want to run it, get a command prompt in the ofbiz directory and type
"startofbiz".  The README file in the root directory (which you can open
with wordpad or any editor that doesn't mind not having \r) has URLs to
connect your browser to it to begin playing around.  Once it's running, have
a look at https://localhost:8443/webtools/control/main .  Click on "Entity
Data Maintenance" and "Entity Reference[Static version].  That'll expose you
to the tables that are used.  As a developer, webtools is your best friend.

I have never successfully run it from Eclipse but I am guessing a clever
Eclipse aficionado could make it happen.

Believe it or not, I still use Visual Studio 5 for Java editing because it
is still the best editor around for me (as a fast typist, autocompletion is
always getting in my way).  Netbeans would be tied with Eclipse as my second
favorite editor because it has a nice gui editor and the same key set as my
old standby Visual Studio.  Eclipse though, over all, is a better
environment.  It's just such a big beast to learn.

Re: After running build.xml

Scott Gray
Something is using one of the ports required by OFBiz, normally a
restart will solve the problem.

On Windows you can use Active Ports to know "who" is using which ports and more (closing, DNS, main ports used list, etc.). You will
not have to make any syntax efforts ;o)

RE: After running build.xml

In reply to this post by Scott Gray
Am I correct in saying the following after running the build.xml is to:

1.      java -jar ofbiz.jar

2.      startofbiz.bat

And then I am ready??  I am a bit scared in opening the project in Eclipse
because I did it last time before I ran build.xml and I got about 300
warnings and about 120 errors.  Will these warnings be gone now after I ran
build.xml?

On a Windows machine, you would just do step 2.

Check your project settings in Eclipse - make sure the java compiler is set up to support v5 code.

On a Windows machine, you would just do step 2.

Check your project settings in Eclipse - make sure the java compiler is set

Double clicking the .bat file will bring up a command prompt and run the .bat file within it. So, no

RE: After running build.xml

Ok.

My trouble is I can't get the navigator to open in Eclipse.  I think it is
with the Resource perspective.  But when I select resource I only have/see
Project explorer.  Can you please help me.  I want to see the web pages.

You can use Eclipse for that too. If you are using a pre 3.4 version, simply right-click on the build.xml you want to run, choose
Run As/Ant Task and that's all. Actually I only use Eclipse now for running ant tasks, I have one build (menu entry) for each module
I already built and just choose them thru the Run menu. <=  Simple version, actually I use 3.4 at the moment. I have asked for a
smart replace (in all files) this summer (was using 3.3) and got it with 3.4M1 with some inconvenients. I lost all my Run menu
entries for all my projects :'(- was not yet Christmas but those Eclipse Guys are not Santa Claus anyway, mmm... ;o)-  I'm pretty
satisfied with 3.4M2 now. But there if you want to run an ant task you have to  : right-click on the build.xml you want to run,
choose Run As/External Tool Settings and then create a new menu entry (called a configuration before being a menu entry) and set
your parameters (easy to do normally). If I find some remaining strengthes somewhere, I will ask why it has changed. Being able to
create them on the fly was really great !

I will put that in my Tips (but I will wait the end of the story ;o)
