Example tutorial

Carlos Villavicencio
Hello, I was wondering if there is a full tutorial where I can learn how to
do simple tasks i.e. render tables from queries, perform inserts and updates
to the database, etc. Almost every thing that the example component does
(but I don't know if it's me or it's a bit difficult to understant for a
person who see ofbiz for the first time).

Thanks.

PD: I reviewed the tutorials from opensourcestrategies but it seems to be a
little out-of-date (old version of ofbiz).

Hi all in the query,

had got the same problem because lot's of the documentations are at least made for
programmers i imagine (and i'm not....) Im trying right now to substract some business purposes
to put this together for the end-users at the backend..... because they just want to use the tool "as is".

Think it would be helpful to explain some functions on a "Users way of sight", will mean what is the real function of a field or a relation in Ofbiz. P.e. whatfore is the "Example" used in Ofbiz ???? It's explained in the video tutorial just with: example Test. I didn't get the point to understand what can i use for the Example in my business......

I'm writing down a "Users manual" in the moment to explain some things a bit more detailled to my collegues...

Regards

Martin

Re: Example tutorial

Done in http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBADMIN/Apache+OFBiz+Getting+Started
and http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBADMIN/OFBiz+Documentation+Index
I also updated the link to the old wiki to the archive : http://web.archive.org/web/20070811060319/http://ofbizwiki.go-integral.com/

About the Practice document and at large :
When you put code into a Wiki page it's better to surrend it by {code} tags (escpecially with xml or html, but true anyway).
Actually I stopped to use the Rich Text mode. You invariably end up with a mess when editing large pages. I now always use the Wiki
Markup mode. A little more to learn at start (not much : http://docs.ofbiz.org/renderer/notationhelp.action) but no longer any
problems. For instance you can see the result of using Rich Text mode when you pass in Wiki Markup mode :(

I say all that because I wanted to clean the 7.c part but I gave up when I saw the page in Wiki Markup mode. Having code surrended
by {code} tags avoids these kind of problems.

It's only my experience though...

Re: Example tutorial

David E Jones

Jacques,

I hear you on the editing stuff... I much prefer the plain wiki text
mode over the WYSIWYG one.

A couple of notes on general organization:

1. unless there is an extreme circumstance a page in the OFBADMIN
space should not link to one in the OFBIZ (wiki) space

2. if the page from Pranay is to become a standard document going
forward a few things need to happen:
2.1. the document content needs to be reviewed and related documents
need to be searched for among the existing docs
2.2. wherever possible content from the document should be moved into
existing documents
2.3. for content that doesn't fit in any existing doc one or more new
pages should be created (in whichever controlled/moderated space fits
best, ie OFBADMIN, OFBENDUSER, or OFBTECH) and linked to from all
related pages

The whole reason we have more controlled spaces like these is so that
the editors/moderators can do steps 1-3 above and keep those spaces
more clean and consistent than would be expected for something like
the wiki. In other words, if anything goes into those spaces a little
more effort is required before it goes in than would be the case for
the OFBIZ (open wiki) space.

Thanks for comments David,

From the positive returns on user ML I thought it would be worth to link the Pranay's Practice document in the meantime, that's why

I have no time to seriously review the document but I will do it ASAP and will then follow your guidelines. I think it's final place
should be in OFBTECH.
