To open an OST (Outlook Offline Data File) in Outlook 2016, you typically won't open it directly like you would with a PST (Personal Storage Table) file. OST files are created automatically by Outlook to store a local copy of your mailbox when you're using an Exchange email account or other types of email accounts that support offline access. They are designed to work in the background to synchronize changes with the server.

However, if you need to access the data in an OST file for some reason, you have a few options:

1. Convert OST to PST:

The most common approach is to convert the OST file to a PST file, which is a personal data file that can be opened and imported into Outlook. Here's how to do it:

Download and install a third-party OST to PST conversion tool. There are several available online; some are free, while others are paid.

Run the conversion tool and select the OST file you want to convert.

Choose a location to save the resulting PST file.

Start the conversion process.

Once the conversion is complete, open Outlook 2016.

Go to "File" > "Open & Export" > "Open Outlook Data File."

Select the PST file you created in the conversion process.

The PST file will appear in the Outlook folder pane, and you can access its contents.

2. Use a Third-Party OST Viewer:

Alternatively, if you only need to view the contents of the OST file without importing it into Outlook, you can use a third-party OST viewer. These tools allow you to open and browse the data within the OST file without converting it to a PST. Some popular OST viewers include Kernel for OST Viewer and Aryson OST File Viewer.

Please note that these are third-party solutions, and it's important to exercise caution when downloading and using such software. Ensure that you download tools from reputable sources and scan them for malware before installation.

3. Use an Outlook Profile:

If you have access to the original Outlook profile that created the OST file and that profile is still functional, you can use it to access the data in the OST file. Here's how:

Open Outlook 2016.

Click on "File" > "Open & Export" > "Open Outlook Data File."

Browse to the location of the OST file.

Select the OST file and click "Open."

The OST file will be added to your Outlook profile, and you can access its contents.

Remember that opening an OST file in Outlook directly is not the primary use case for these files, and they are generally intended for offline access and synchronization with the mail server. If you have concerns about OST file integrity or data loss, consider contacting your email administrator or IT support for assistance.
