Is Columbus Day A Federal Holiday?

Is Columbus Day A Federal Holiday? Monday, Oct. 13, is unique. It celebrates both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. People celebrate Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. It has been a national holiday since 1892. Parades across the country show Italian-American heritage and pride, according to *Smithsonian* magazine.

In 2021, former President Joe Biden declared the first Indigenous Peoples' Day. They made this announcement on the same day as Columbus Day. It’s not a government event, but some cities and states do recognize it. The decree came after much feedback on Christopher Columbus's treatment of Native Americans.
