We run it on Linux and have had very high levels of uptime with problems
only related to periodic hardware upgrades. For example on an 800mhz
single processor with 500MB RAM and a 400k connection we experience an
average of 200 days between restarts. The restarts are usually related to
us wanting to upgrade hardware (usually memory) rather than problems with
the system. That said in the last two weeks (where we had media coverage
in a national newspaper) the higher load did cause us some problems (which
were resolved by increasing the memory).
Caveat. We are not a high volume site and most of the use of our systems
is to accomplish fairly simple tasks (ordering/adding/ammending products).
People with higher loads may experience different results.
We don't run Windows on production/staging or development servers and so I
can't comment on it. We do run it on some of our development workstations
and it seems fine.
Very best wishes
Ian
