Ofbiz Industries? Is it possible

Gavin Mabie
Hi

Ofbiz is a vast software system with multiple applications and a steep
learning curve.  And while there is a lot of activity on the architecture
layer, there isn't much OOTB functionalities for specific industries.  An
ofbiz-newbie is no-doubt overwhelmed by the depth and extend of the
software.  I would like to suggest that somebody look into something like
"ofbiz-industry" applications.  Maybe something like
"Ofbiz-Communications/Financial Services/Healthcare/Hi-Tech/etc.  Or maybe
something even more specific like Ofbiz-Retail-Clothing/Gardening etc.  I
don't know how this would work.  But it occurred to me that a lot of
technical people come online to look for a specific application.  While we
have branches like JQuery and other in Ofbiz would it not make sense to
introduce branches along the lines of particular application - like
Ofbiz-Retail-clothing.  Just a though.

Regards

Gavin

This is what specialpurpose is supposed to be. To create a branch we really need contributor(s) commitment and at least a
committer.

BTW the jQuery is there only for history purpose, it has been merged back to the trunk, same for addbirt and
multitenant20100310. The others have not been yet merged or are abandonned.

RE: Ofbiz Industries? Is it possible

Okay - I can see POS and ProjectMrg and a few others in Special Purpose, but
these are really general applications, i.e. they are not industry specific.
Maybe one could look into creating seed data per industry application
instead of creating a branch.

I'm not sure what you mean by "creating a branch". Typically a branch is used to make it easier to a small group to collaborate on something that is involves non-trivial changes (ie that will take some time), and that if done partially would break existing functionality in the system. The intent of a branch is generally to be incorporated back into the truck (which exception of release branches and the like, though they will never be "merged" completely back into the trunk bug fixes from them may often be merged into the trunk).

In any case, these sorts of projects can and absolutely should exist, but there is no reason they have to be part of Apache OFBiz itself. I'm a big fan of separate projects with a well defined purpose and goal. For the "next generation" software based on many of the ideas that initially drove OFBiz I'm making this much more explicit (see the main circle diagram on moqui.org for details).

David,

I think you have a problem with the DNS on moqui.org domain. I have had to
add the www prefix to make it work. See the ping command trace below:

jsoto@jf-01:~$ ping moqui.org
PING moqui.org (216.21.239.197) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- moqui.org ping statistics ---
15 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 14035ms

jsoto@jf-01:~$ ping www.moqui.org
PING e2982.c.akamaiedge.net (95.100.124.59) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 95.100.124.59: icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=43.8 ms
64 bytes from 95.100.124.59: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=44.0 ms
64 bytes from 95.100.124.59: icmp_seq=3 ttl=57 time=43.8 ms
64 bytes from 95.100.124.59: icmp_seq=4 ttl=57 time=44.1 ms
^C
--- e2982.c.akamaiedge.net ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 5712ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 43.814/43.972/44.151/0.291 ms

BTW, it's good to see Moqui on road. Good job!

The OFBiz mailing list probably isn't the best place to discuss this, but yes you're correct, there is nothing hosted on plain "moqui.org", the web server is only on the "www" sub-domain.

Re: Ofbiz Industries? Is it possible

BJ Freeman
In reply to this post by Gavin Mabie
the approach I took was developer a folder like specialpurpose that has
over 50 industries as components. Some are new and being developed now.
They are based on Business plan concept, both for those already in
business and those that are starting business.

except of the technical setup everthing is setup internal.

you can look at the setup app that is a simpler approach to this.
