Hello all,
I am using Ofbiz ecommerce module, the version is 4.0. I am aware an upgrade to latest version would not be very easy so the question is: does latest version offer more advanced flexibility of templates and CSS regarding a more flexible layout for shop user interface? Thanks, Flopa |
Lot of work going on in CSS area so *Yes* you will see lot of the things
advanced in latest trunk revision. Hello Ashish:
I wouldn't be so quick to encourage new users to visit this link. The 3x3 layout on the landing page still does not render correctly for at least Firefox on a MAC. Not sure about other browsers. In a word: "unprofessional". Florin, the templates in the new system are amazingly more flexible, semantically correct, and allow you to move things around very easily with only good knowledge of CSS. Please don't let the viewing of the site at 800x600 be the determining factor here - as that is not even on the radar as a viewport size that people use these days.
It is true that there are issues in every browser when you've bring things down to a really small level, there is a bug which needs to be corrected - but I would go so far as to say that the foundation you are working with in the trunk is leaps and bounds ahead of what is in either release branch. Please check out the trunk, and ask direct questions about places where you may see discrepancies. Where the project is headed - especially in contrast from where we came from - means we're trending in a positive direction. I was testing this in Firefox and Safari on a MAC and am pleased with the rendering as long as you're viewing it with a viewport of over about 1190 (basically any 13" Macbook). Thanks Jacques - that is great to know. I have not seen these - maybe
because I'm not on Windows - I didn't know. Have you tried altering any of the padding / margins to test it on Windows? If I had a box here, I'd be all on it with you. The others have not been an issues for me at all. Btw, these are all very simple CSS fixes though - I doubt any of them have to do with the layout - so anyone with a windows box should be able to look at the styles and update them where appropriate and submit patches. Looking forward to it - the flexibility is there, now it's time we all learn to use it and fix it up. Maybe not for developers, but for every one person I know who uses a desktop with potentially larger "viewport sizes" as you call it, to access the Internet, I know 20 people who use laptops with small screens and small "viewports". And, those screens get smaller every day...Too bad because it is getting really hard for people like me to read all that text on such small screens. > It is true that there are issues in every browser when you've bring > things down to a really small level, there is a bug which It is not a "small" thing when we are talking about the landing page. I guess my "testing" criteria is a little bit more exacting than yours. These kinds of "small" rendering problems were not an issue - regardless of the browser - in older 4.x versions. Thanks for the added insight. Looking forward to developers, who know
how to use CSS, continuing to help make the project better. What we have today is amazingly more flexible and makes each and every theme developed on top of this system easier to use and program. As might be expected, the infinitely generic OOTB theme is not the one that most people roll out in production. I personally think these are small, because I actually understand the underlying technology and know where and how issues can be caused and fixed. Ruth, you've been involved in the project for a really long time - and even at one point as a developer - and these issues plague you, right? Why not dive in and try some minor tweaks with CSS and let us know what you see on that small screen? I'd love to have some feedback from you and Jacques, to the dev list, about what happens when you change this CSS entry - it would be great to have a deeper level of testing out there that helps pinpoint the problems so we can fix them. Back to you Florin - I'm standing pat on my point - the CSS and HTML in the current trunk are so far advanced beyond what as there before (that's right inline stylind and tables don't break) that I can't even put it to words. We'll keep fixing the issues as they come up and will take this project to the next level. Hi Tim:
I thought that was what I was doing with the several Jira issues (and patches) I submitted. And sure, I will continue to report problems as I see them. Everything I wrote about in my original response to Florin has been reported. My bad is that I don't have the time to track each issue w/each release. Going forward, however I will try to do a better job of managing my submitted issues and correlating them with releases and fixes. re Florin: I agree that the core product has moved forward significantly since the 4.x release. In fact, I took the plunge and I am using it to support distribution of the books I have written (http://www.myofbiz.com). The good news is that the framework and core remain rock solid and provide everything I need to do that. Sadly, the very part of OFBiz I was hoping to make the most use of right off-the-bat requires too much upfront customizations to get up and running quickly. I discovered this the hard way - I tried to use it for screen shots for the books and build the website store at th same time. It was easier and faster to just start over and write my own components. Eventually, I plan to get back to using the eCommerce application to build a store etc. but for now, all I can do is lament that while the HTML and CSS restructuring may be an improvement, it doesn't make adoption for new users a very appealing prospect. Tim, and all the hard working OFBiz supporters/committers out there, my goal is to get as many people looking and using OFBiz as I can. I don't get paid to endorse it - and certainly not to critique it - but I really do just want continued improvement. It is still the best thing going for enterprise automation! Thank you for the details sent regarding this topic,
It is anyway a difficult decision for me because we invested lot of work into that version and I am affraid the upgrade to latest version won't be very easy... Mostly because of the switch from bsh to groovy... am I right? Coming back to the layout, I think it is the time to list here few implementations so that you can get an idea what are we dealing with.. http://86.122.93.253:8080/pharmaVersand http://86.122.93.253:8080/ecommerce There are several other implementations, each asking for particular layouts... There are very strict and detailed layout requirements received and sometimes difficult to fulfill... of course the admin area is less important bu the shop UI area should be really top developed.. We extended the entire mechanism in a way that we offer one layout and additionally, customer could upload by himself css/pictures and even templates for his own customization of UI Best regards, Florin > And also some issues pending related to cleanup and css fixes, see > https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-2983 > > Jacques Le Roux wrote: >> And also some issues pending, see >> https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-3037 >> >> Jacques >> >> From: "Ashish Vijaywargiya" <[hidden email]> >>> Lot of work going on in CSS area so *Yes* you will see lot of the >>> things >>> advanced in latest trunk revision. >>> >>> To review the current ecommerce front store you can visit following >>> link. >>> http://demo.ofbiz.org/ecommerce/control/main >>> >>> -- >>> Ashish >>> >>> On Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 10:52 PM, Florin Popa >>> <[hidden email]>wrote: >>> >>>> Hello all, >>>> >>>> I am using Ofbiz ecommerce module, the version is 4.0. >>>> >>>> I am aware an upgrade to latest version would not be very easy so the >>>> question is: does latest version offer more advanced flexibility of >>>> templates and CSS regarding a more flexible layout for shop user >>>> interface? >>>> >>>> >>>> Thanks, >>>> Flopa >>>> >>> >> > > > Regards |
Hi Florin:
IMO, the Groovy switch, while inconvenient is not a show stopper. Groovy is very similar to the Bean Shell. Where I have difficult logic that I don't want to spend the time to figure out the Groovy equivalent, l use BSH. I may go back and convert, but BSH - like JSP - is still supported and it works fine. Good luck. That's correct, BSH is still supported. The more difficult parts of migration will be data model changes and depending on how much low- level customization you do certain API changes too. To get an idea of what data model changes will look like this wiki page is useful: http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBTECH/Revisions+Requiring+Data+Migration -David On Nov 2, 2009, at 6:31 AM, Ruth Hoffman wrote: > Hi Florin: > IMO, the Groovy switch, while inconvenient is not a show stopper. > Groovy is very similar to the Bean Shell.
