Re: svn commit: r923126 - /ofbiz/site/index.html

Tim Ruppert
Jacques / Ruth, this still points to the home page instead of any particular thread where anyone can go read about this.  This is why we removed the other myofbiz entry early last week.  Is this something that we can adjust that might take the user to this content right away instead of pushing right to the home page?

Cheers,
Ruppert

Re: svn commit: r923126 - /ofbiz/site/index.html

Hi Tim

It was me not Ruth that gave Jacques these links.

I did put a message on the user mailing list about this asking for feedback on this as well some other documentation I've put on the wiki and did ask for some guidance from the PMC but the only response I got was Jacques.

I'll check with Ruth but if we cant link it to a thread directly then do I take it that it will have to be removed?

Thanks

Hi All:
Here's the issue: in order to see the content, you must take a survey.
We could set the link to the survey page...but I think that is
misleading. I'm not sure what the answer is here.

Ruth

My biggest concern here is that we don't open a door for people to link to their website's main page, news items should link directly to the content described.  Is it possible to create a separate point of entry to the survey and subsequent content?

Thanks

Hi Scott:
I understand and respect your concerns. I'm going to have to think about
some way to do this that meets all of our objectives. If you don't mind
leaving the "door" open so that I can go back and think about it for a
bit, I'll get back to you and see what I can do.

Thanks much!

Thanks for your understanding Ruth and sure, I think it's fine to leave things as they are while you are working on a solution.

So it's ok for Ruth to leave something in the project, but it's not
for Hans?

I'm not sure what you're saying, Ruth has accepted the problem and agreed to fix it, as a good faith measure I don't see the harm in allowing the link to remain in place temporarily.  Of course, as always, this is just my opinion and I'm happy to discuss other options with the community.

Which specific Hans situation are you referring to?  There have been enough of them lately that it isn't immediately clear.

Hi Scott, Adam:
I'm ok with taking it off. Last thing I want to do is start another
exchange of emails concerning this. I would just like to keep the door
open to put something up on the site when I have a solution.
Thanks again.

I don't care either way.  Removing it causes more work, so I would
lean towards that.  But, it's up to the person who will actually be
doing the work.

That was an entirely different situation and I don't think you can draw parallels here.

The major issue for me was that Hans was advertising an unofficial twitter account as being an official resource directly on our main page.  I'm still completely convinced that getting it off the main page ASAP was absolutely the right thing to do.

As I described earlier in this thread my concerns about the link to Ruth's website are of an entirely different nature.

It's not, if the discussion turns to actually making it official(which
is where it started to go).

I'm sorry I don't see how it is in anyway similar to the current issue.

There was no guarantee that the twitter account would become official but in the meantime users were following the feed under the impression that it was official.  Hans never agreed to anything close to what was required to make it official i.e. remove his company information and send the credentials to the PMC.  Specifically he absolutely refused to remove his company information in the immediate future.  It concerns me that there could be users following that twitter account right now that are under the impression that apache_ofbiz is an official source of information because of the time the account spent on the front page.  That concern is very much different from my concern here that a link to myofbiz.com in the news section will open the door for other people to think it is okay to do the same.

Hi Everyone

I agree with Ruth – I'm OK for it to be removed if its causing problems.

Do some formal rules exist already around this?  If not then what about this as a suggestion? As there has been several misunderstandings related to what can and cant be put on the main page – could the PMC consider putting together some written rules made accessible to the whole community so it can be made crystal clear to anyone interested in putting information on the main OFBiz page.

I think it's hard to understand what's required if there's nothing telling you what is and isn't allowed.

Thanks

Re: svn commit: r923126 - /ofbiz/site/index.html

Hi Sharan,

The ongoing discussion (from my point of view at least) is important because Adam seems to be perceiving my treatment of Hans as being different from how I'm treating others.

I still don't think the link needs to be removed if it is going to be fixed in a fairly short timeframe.

In regards to what can appear on the main page, the news section is the only thing I think we need to discuss and I'm not sure that the guidelines for it are enough to warrant a document about it.  Additionally I'm not sure it requires any PMC action unless we as a community can't agree on what is acceptable.

Here is my general take on things going into the news section (as a community member, I'm not attempting to represent the PMC here):
- The item should promote OFBiz either educationally or as a genuine news item from a reputable source
- The item should not attempt (or appear to attempt) to be an advertisement for any organization other than the ASF and the OFBiz project, except by virtue of the content being hosted on a company's website
- The item's link should point directly to the content or at the very least to a page who's primary focus is the delivery of the content described in the item

If we can come to a consensus about the guidelines then I guess we could create a document for it and perhaps link to it from the news section.

Regards
Scott

Hi Scott

Sounds good to me too.

I'll work with Ruth and we'll set a deadline for the 'short timeframe' for which she can do the fix. We'll notify that to this thread and if we cant fix it by that date then by we'll ask that the link be removed.

Thanks

A better way to put it might be rule by man as opposed to rule by law.
