The parameters map is a pain

Let's say I want to do some preprocessing in a custom event before an OOTB event gets triggered, I can't do it because there is no way for me to alter any of the parameters.  The only way for me to do it is completely replace the OOTB event which obviously isn't something we want developers to have to do.

I would prefer to see events make use of the combined map rather than the parameters map.  Any thoughts?
