What do you use for self-defense?

I'm a girl, and for some time now I've been living in a neighborhood that is not the best, to put it mildly. I have repeatedly witnessed people getting into quarrels, even fights. It's become commonplace for me, but I don't feel safe. Especially in the evenings when I go out or even just up the stairs in the house. Maybe there are some self-defense devices that don't look too suspicious, but at the same time will help in case of danger?

I completely understand your concern. I’ve been in a similar situation before. I started carrying a self defense keychain set, and it really gave me peace of mind. I’ve used it a few times, just knowing it’s there if I need it. Whether it's the alarm to draw attention or a small tool for defense.
