Hi All
I am developing a web application which will have certain paid services. I am looking for a framework/software to manage the products, prices, subscriptions etc of the users for the same. I got to know about OfBiz. I would like to know from the group following: - Is Ofbiz a right solution for my app needs? I am time and resource constrained. At the same time, I do not want to re-invent the wheel - Can somebody point me to a related case study? - If OfBiz is not good for me, then please point me to some other framework/software which I can use. Regards nitin |
if your are time and resource constrained, ofbiz is not right for you.

Hi BJ:
What do you mean by time & resource constrained? IMHO, one of the great strengths of OFBiz is that you don't need a DBA or lots of developers to get up and running quickly. Once you understand how things work, putting together applications is a snap. You can get started implementing a few easy requirements and then build as you learn more. No reinventing the wheel. Just my 2 cents. There wasn't a lot of detail in the original question, but yes, OFBiz does support products sold as subscriptions in a variety of forms (ie with lots of options supported OOTB). To really say yes or no you'd have to do a gap analysis based on more detailed requirements. I'm not sure what BJ meant, as he wasn't very specific either. Whatever he meant, I don't agree. If you are writing a simple application and don't want to reuse existing functionality the OFBiz framework itself is a great way of doing things and a great set of tools that IMO competes well with everything else out there in terms of developer efficiency and runtime scalability. For more complex applications Apache OFBiz becomes even more valuable as long as you make sure to reuse existing things, and then you can really put together complex applications quickly. Perhaps what BJ meant is that if you have any sort of complex set of requirements then it will require effort no matter what tools or existing functionality you try to use. If you think that you can find something to use OOTB, or even adjust your requirement to fit some OOTB solution, just make sure you review it in detail first! It can certainly work out, but often doesn't. Even if it does pretty much all businesses that live more than a year or so will want to change and expand things and many solutions designed to be used only OOTB will make that difficult. Again, this is where OFBiz comes in with a combination of existing functionality and flexibility too. -David |

Hi All Yes, it is possible to manage products and its prices through Catalog manager module but I am not very sure about subscription management feature in Ofbiz. As you have mentioned that time and resource is a constraint then ofbiz ideally fit for your application as it is open source, OFBiz supports Operating systém as Open SUSE, Browser as Firefox and other office applications such as Open Office etc; which is absolutely free and moreover you need not to develop the source code from scratch, you can configure and customize your application using the prebuilt modules and functionalities Cheers!!!!!!!!
