A bit of history 1st.
# When I implemented the jQuery multi select it it did not occurs to me that I'd use it in place like findorders. And when I used it there did not thought about this aspect indeed.
# The checkbox based multi-select over Order List was implemented long ago and is a more complex thing. When I committed it (it was a contribution from the Opentaps project) David did not like how it was done, but we never changed that.
Extending the jQuery multi select to remember previous setting should be possible. Changing the checkbox based multi-select over Order List is another kind of task, and as you I like how it's done, even if not perfect and very specific. So I think it's OK to keep .2 and we need to improve .1.
As to use the jQuery multi select everywhere it's possible, I still believe, after improving .1, is the way to go. Specific cases like in order lists might be crossed and then properly addressed.
