I'm not sure we should do this or not. But few items to be consider if we would like to go with this;
1) OrderItem (Sales, Purchase) and OrderAdjustment (tax, discount) both map to InvoiceItem based on type.
2) ReturnItem and ReturnAdjustment both map to InvoiceItem based on type.
3) Invoice can be created without Order and Return.
4) In case of explode invoice items (configurable purchase) this needs to be handle.
5) Invoice against shipments.
6) Invoice against work efforts and time sheet.
Additional note, the quantity and amount field available in InvoiceItem same as OrderItem. All should be good I think.
