Pierre Smits commented on OFBIZ-5307:
-------------------------------------

This is called Closed-End production run, as you know the expected outcome (the quantity of end products as per bom). For both discrete and process oriented manufacturing this is standard functionality.

What I guess you're talking about is being able to define an Open-End production-run, whereby you know what the inputs are and the expected end product. But what you don't know upfront is the (expected) quantity to produce.

A good example is waste separation as a manufacturing process. You know what goes in, e.g. 1 ton of unsorted waste. And you know what come out of the process as the end product, e.g. rest waste. The other products coming out of the process are (in current functionality) by-products.

So in order to have Open-End production runs, the improvement should be able to have users define the BoM without the quantities, and when generating the production run be able to have a pre-defined output of 0 of the end product plus be able to add other end products. During the execution of the production the output of each defined end product must be equal to or greater than 0.

In current, closed-end productions it is not possible to produce more than the quantity provided when defining the production run.

> Currently the system only allows for 1 product to be made up from multiple other products.
> A common process in manufacturing is to either manufacture multiple parts from one part (e.g Chop a length of steel that has been ordered in from a supplier and manufacture your own washers) or to disassemble a returned manufactured item into its components and restock these components.
> The BOM/MRP/ Manufacturing and production run functionality should be changed to allow for production runs in both ways (assemble / disassemble)
