ivan jefton commented on OFBIZ-5378:
------------------------------------
yes, i understand the bit about not shipping bytecode.
i disagree, however, that what i reported is "not a problem". it IS a problem, and you're welcome to disagree (and even overrule) my thought. it's open source, after all.
my point, apparently lost, is that following the steps shown in the "quick start guide" flat out do not work. not even close. that to me is a problem.
i spent 3 hours working through a variety of documentation, compiling the application, loading the sample data (the command for which in the quick start guide, by the way, is deprecated), and finally getting a web page to come up. sadly, i was unable to log in with admin/ofbiz. after spending another half hour or so figuring out how to directly access the derby database, i discovered that there are only two users in the user_login table (system, anonymous), and neither is enabled.
i'm not a neophyte and i spent much longer on this than a typical user would have (in my humble opinion).
this is not the apache software i'm used to. ant just works. tomcat just works. ofbiz, so far, doesn't.
i have no doubt that the final ofbiz product is fabulous, but at this point it seems more like i got a wonderful bag of parts (sans instruction manual) that somehow can be put together to make the BMW shown on the front of the box.

> following the demo and test setup guide (
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBADMIN/Demo+and+Test+Setup+Guide), i downloaded ver 12.04.02, extracted it to a directory, and attempted to run startofbiz.bat from the ofbiz directory (named apache-ofbiz-12.04.02). no file found.
> searched for the bat file; found it in tools subdir. ran it. couldn't start java from \bin\java.
> set JAVA_HOME and re-ran startofbiz.bat; couldn't find ofbiz.jar. performed dir/s/b ofbiz.jar, file not found.
> apparently the ofbiz.jar file doesn't exist.
> ofbiz.jar should be included in the download.
