I have just double checked the XFCE/FC3 combination mentioned by Jacques above, there is no problem for me with this combination, however Gnome/FC3 displays the blocking window on top, but if you hide it, you are stuck!

My XFCE version is 4.2, the version Jacques was referring to above (in combination with Ubuntu was 4.4).

Perhaps this answers the problem of why Andy couldn't remember which WM worked, i.e. perhaps you need an older XFCE for POS to work.

This is really beginning to sound like a WM issue as Andy suggests.

Perhaps this could be resolved by simply redrawing the main window to show alert messages rather that using a modal window?
