Adding a NPE check there surely can't hurt, but I'd like to be sure how it happened to you. You have a shared DB between many OFBiz instances and those instances where not coordinated. I mean you changed the data model in one instance but not the others (or one other) or you did not reboot them (or one) even if the data model was changed there, no other scenarios?
