It's very likely that these strange errors are related to groovy scripts throwing exceptions that don't have error messages.  One strong possibility is java.util.ConcurrentModificationException.  I ran into this issue and ended up tracking it down to the lack of exception reporting in the GroovyScriptEngine: OFBIZ-6888.
