Given that we have 2 branches waiting to have a release cut, I don't see any harm in porting it to those branches. Otherwise this kind of improvement would go in a future branch, and we don't have sights on when that will happen.
The patch can be backported by adopters working on older branches ( prior to r14.12.x) by themselves at their own pace.
