There has been some talk on this forum about ofbiz following a ubuntu
style of release. Ubuntu 9.10 has just been released - I guess we won't be having an ofbiz 9.10? Many thanks, Chris |
Hi Chris
It's just the naming convention we're following and not their release cycles. Hi all,
Coming back to an earlier post of mine: Does anyone on this list have an idea of the next release? I mean in reference to * timing * content Regarding the content of the next release: @Committers: Are there any major steps in the various modules that you think could be aligned into the next release any time soon? Would there be a "freeze" during which only fixes to release features would be committed? Who could be doing a stabilization run (to identify required fixes) and where? Apparently, there would be more than two people interested to see a next release on the horizon, and if it would only document that OFBiz actually is evolving (and a lot I would say over the last 6 months since I follow it). One of the major steps in trunk is e.g. the move of ecommerce from applications to specialpurpose, the relocation of themes to a central place etc. And there are for sure others as well which IMHO merit a major release. oops. well, then I missed that while using trunk only. apologies.

So you don't use the current release but you're advocating another
release for us to maintain? Scott,
Do Hotwax media work from ofbiz releases when implementing for clients, or do you mostly work from trunk and svn revision numbers? Hi Scott,
I think you're getting this wrong. I do work from the current trunk and I never "tried" the release since I knew the trunk was more advanced in the features I require. I am very close to start supporting my own customers on OFBiz setups and I would prefer to work on a stable-release-basis rather than on a certain trunk revision which will be changed at the next commit. So, I would prefer to start customize (branch out) some bits for customers from a release than using the current revision as a reference. However, if in this mailing list there is no preference for a "release" driven development cycle, I cannot help it and I need to do the testing myself. Having said that: I think there is opportunity in sticking to a release cycle (and hence to a certain release process which involves e.g. a integration/stabilization run) and I think we're not here to make OFBiz a secret but rather want to grow it's acceptance, right? I am pretty sure, IT organisations will prefer to use a "released" product rather than the trunk of a certain day just as I do with my business. They need to maintain configurations themselves and would want a stable and reproducible basis for the efforts they may invest on top (and so do I). It is also easier then to plan and analyse an upgrade to the next release. So, yes, you may blame me for being ignorant of the last release, but I sure will not be for the next one.
