A lot of good reasons for using FTL have been described, but the main reason we chose it was pretty simple actually:
1. flexibility
A JSP is not a true templating engine, it must be run through a Serlvet which limits it flexibility for use in non-webapps, and even in webapps it makes it _very_ difficult to write tools to flexibly compose pages from multiple parts (and share/reuse those parts), and to associate external data preparation with the "template". For an example of an early attempt at this, see the regions stuff in OFBiz (still used in the WebTools webapp). The stuff there is a real mess and quite difficult to work with compared to the screen widget, ftl and bsh (or other data prep stuff like services, etc).
