How to add the image?

I am trying to add the image for the products.
I have given the url as '/images/image1.jpg' for the field
"small_image_url" in the table "product".
  why does the line "<#assign smallImageUrl = productContentWrapper.get("SMALL_IMAGE_URL")?if_exists>"
not considering the image?
  should I need to do anything else for this?
