Yes, I would recommend Jabber too.
They were using their own licence
http://www.jabber.org/about/josl.shtmlbut they stopped
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/category (see
"Licenses that have been voluntarily retired")
It seems that they use GPL now but not sure.
