what's the best way to use subversion

Patrick-4
Do I need to set up an subversion server on my machine?  If so which
one should I use?  Just looking for generic subversion advice.  I
don't really think I will contribute to the main branch.

to actually contribute to the svn directly you need to be accepted as a
committer. otherwise submitting to the jira is the only other way.

It depends on what you're doing, but if you plan on writing a lot of code then some sort of version control system would be wise.  I'd also recommend trying to limit your changes to the OOTB component by using overriding components in the hot-deploy folder.
