Apache license compatible icons

Bruno Busco
Hi list,
I was searching the web for some nice icons to use in the OFBiz UI.
There are lots of sites, one for example with good icons is this
http://www.iconarchive.com/
But I am not sure about license.

Do we have some selected site where we can download icons to be distributed
with OFBiz without license problems?
Is there some repository inside the Apache foundation?

I think this is a problem is common to many Apache foundation projects,
isn't it?

Many thanks,
Bruno

Bruno,

I had the same problem when searching icons for OFBIZ-1912. Then I gave
up. It is not easy(at least for me) to find icons which are noted as
compatible with Apache license.

Does anyone know any image/icon library which can be used in OFBiz w/o
license issues?

The icons I finally used in OFBIZ-1999 (A Portal/Portlet implementation)
where taken from
http://www.lullabot.com/articles/free_gpl_icons_lullacons_pack_1

I hope they are OK to be distributed with OFBiz.

Sorry Bruno but they are GPL licensed hence not ASL compatible
http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBIZ/About+Apache+Software+Fundation+Licence+and+more...

Creative Commons Attribution (CC-A) could be a better way to search

Re: Apache license compatible icons

Bruno Busco
I have found this site http://www.famfamfam.com/ that contains nice icon
sets offered under Creative Commons license.

In particular the SILK icon set (over 700 icons) seems quite useful.

It can be seen here:
http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/previews/index_abc.png
and downloaded here:
http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/famfamfam_silk_icons_v013.zip

Even the flags icon set could be useful:
http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/famfamfam_flag_icons.zip

Are we OK if we start using this into OFBiz?

Then we could use one of BJ suggestions, using Atlassian's as model ;o)
But I'd say keep it simple, maybe it's easier to Google for a CCA one
They are some in http://www.maxpower.ca/free-icons/2006/03/05/ but no help icon :/
There is one in http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/mini/ but it seems GPL licenced. Though Mark James says <<"Mini" is a set of 144
GIF icons available for free use for any purpose.>> on the page. Maybe asking him directly would clarify

Re: Apache license compatible icons

Bruno Busco
Jacques,
I was going to contact Mark James about the possibility to use his icons but
in the contact form he is quite explicit about permission asking e-mail.

Taken from: http://www.famfamfam.com/about/

"If sending me a message regarding icon licencing, please don't expect a
response if you ask 'I'm using your Silk icon set and linking to you from a
footer/credits page, is this OK?' (the answer is yes), if you wish to ask
"Do the Flag/Mini icons sets need attribution or a link" (the answer is no –
both sets are public domain), or if you wish to ask "Do the icons come in
larger sizes?" (Unfortunately not, wysiwyg)."

It seems definitively that we can use them!

Re: Apache license compatible icons

Malin Nicolas

I continue this post since i wish to integrate famfamfam icons in OFBiz standard.

Is there an objection to set famfamfam icons on framework/images/webapp/images/icons directory ?

To integrate icons to themes support I propose to add on glocalDecorator :
                <set field="iconsLocation" from-field="layoutSettings.VT_ICONS_LOC[0]" default-value="/images/icons" global="true"/>

and for hyperlink and submit button we can call icons than :
            <hyperlink description="${uiLabelMap.CommonEdit}" target="ManagePortalPages" image-location="${iconsLocation}/edit.png">

With this, if a theme want to surcharge standard icons the VT_ICONS_LOC attribute can be redefined.

Any suggestions ?

Nicolas

Re: Apache license compatible icons

Ryan Foster-3
I don't see a problem with it, but I don't really see the need.  The JQuery UI library that is now in the framework already has a ton of useful icons in it.
