The donation is to help us cover the cost of developing the
application. If you can donate over $3,000, we can give your
organization immediate access to the source code so you can start using
it right away. (For details, see license link on
http://www.opensourcestrategies.com/ofbiz/accounting.php) If you donate
a smaller amount, we'll keep track of it all, and once the cumulative
donations reach $50,000, the whole application becomes open source.
Currently we already have $29,000 in donations, so another $21,000 is
needed. So if a few larger clients are interested in using it, or if
everybody in the community can spare a smaller donation, we can cover
those costs and release it as open source.
