Top Frozen Baits for Targeting Redfish and Snapper in Clear Lake

Durha
I’ve been planning a fishing trip to Clear Lake soon and want to focus on redfish and snapper. I know live bait works well, but I’m curious about the best frozen bait options that are effective in this area. I’ve heard that frozen bait can sometimes be just as good or even better than live bait, especially when conditions aren’t ideal for keeping bait alive. Does anyone have experience using frozen bait for redfish and snapper around Clear Lake? What types of frozen bait have you found most successful, and how do you usually present them? I want to get a good sense of what works so I can prepare properly.

Change the size of your bait depending on the species and their feeding habits at that moment. Redfish often prefer larger shrimp or baitfish chunks because they can get a better hold, while snapper might go for smaller pieces, especially near rocky areas or oyster beds. I also find it useful to have some frozen crab pieces on hand as a backup; they aren’t always the first choice but can be a good switch-up when fish seem uninterested.

A few frozen baits tend to stand out for both redfish and snapper. For instance, shrimp is a classic — it’s versatile and the scent attracts those species well. Also, small chunks of mullet or menhaden are great for snapper, since those fish naturally feed on baitfish around here. The key is to make sure your frozen bait is thawed just right before using it; you don’t want it too soft or too hard because it affects how it moves and smells in the water. Using frozen bait fish near Kemah TX has been mentioned frequently by local anglers who say it holds up well in the water and still triggers bites.
