[VOTE] Require Java SDK 5 (Java 1.5)

David E Jones

Now that we have done a release branch (liberating in a way, isn't
it?) should we move forward and require Java SDK 5 to run OFBiz?

I think the time passed a while ago where it was safe to do this.
Version 6 of the SDK is out now, and all platforms that I'm aware of
(even Apache Harmony) are SDK 5 compatible.

So, let's vote!

-David

so after we switch, do we review the code to see what needs to be
depreciated?

Well, like you said, "onward and upward".

I've been using JDK 1.5.0_11 without problems.

I forgot a mention about Epson POS printers wich seem to have some
problems to work with jdk 1.5.
I know that Vikrant is currently working with Epson people on this
problem. So I guess a solution will be found anyway

[VOTE][Result] Require Java SDK 5 (Java 1.5)

David E Jones
In reply to this post by David E Jones

Looks like this was a popular item... here are the results:

+1 PMC - 3: David, Jacopo, Andrew
+1 commiters - 3: Scott Gray, Tim Ruppert, Jacques Le Roux
+1 contributors - 6: Anil Patel, Chris Howe, Vinay Agarwal, BJ
Freeman, Joe Eckard, Marco Risaliti
+0 - 0
-1 - 0

The vote passed with the necessary 3 PMC +1 votes. Please note that
we are working on adding more people to the PMC to help get higher
PMC involvement with such votes in the future.

Thanks for the participation from everyone!

Based on this the policy going forward will be that OFBiz requires a
Java SDK 5 (1.5) series JDK to run. Documentation and other changes
will be made over time.

As for Java 6/1.6 we will test that over time and try to support it
soon, but it will probably be quite a while before it is required,
and for big requirements like that there will be another vote like this.

-David

Is 1.5 slower to compile than 1.4 for others or is it just me?

But...
IMHO: I think that OFBiz almost could not use JDK 1.5 features, because:
 * All services get parameters by java.util.Map (this Map contains various
value type)
 * Work with entities (GenericValue, GenericPK and etc) could not use JDK5
generic too.
 * JDK5 Enum almost useless, if services will be using Enum instead of
String constants (role names, order types, payment type, etc) it will be
cool, but in this case user who wants to add own order type (or something
like it) has to change OFBiz source code.
 * Primitive auto wrapping/unwrapping - good feature and it will be useful,
but it could cause to untrivial NullPointerException.
 * All other JDK enhancements is extended libraries, and could be useful for
OFBiz core.

Thanks a lot for an attention.
