This is a very unfortunate and, frankly speaking, annoying issue, Jacques. It's a very good example for changes which have to be provided as a patch, thoroughly reviewed, discussed and to be agreed on *before* they get committed to the codebase.
Jacopo mentioned an alternative solution by Deepak before you even provided the first patch so you did know that you are not the only one working on it. And notice that Deepak reported this issue and is assigned to the issue so you kind of captured "his" issue.
You were asked a month ago to revert your patch and you postponed the revert until today. I'm not surpised that there are problems now to revert the patch when some time passed by.
This could have been avoided completely by following the community approach to work together instead of doing your own thing.
