We are getting more requests to implement OFBiz for manufacturing companies.
In general they are pleased with the functionality except for the production planning which is missing. Further there are fixed assets but they are not connected to the accounting system or asset maintenance. What is needed is a scheduler which plans the production runs looking at the last possible finish date and the available fixed assets (machines/equipment/tools) used in the runs. Question to the community: Anybody already looked into how to do the production planning in manufacturing? Regards, Hans |

What are fixed assets in manufacturing: they are machines, tools etc owned by the manufacturer and available in limited quantities. In order to be sure that these assets which are used in a production run are available at the time the production run is operating and that they are registered in accounting for depreciation and that they are maintained in asset maintenance. you do not see that connection? when not, can you tell me the difference between the fixed assets in manufacturing and the ones in accounting? I know what fixed assets are. OFBiz does all of the things you describe.
The screen in your link has nothing to do with accounting or asset maintenance. Adrian, we link fixed assets between the applications with the fixed

The idea of that screen is that you do not have to specify the exact fixed asset when you define a routing; instead you specify the "class of assets" that can be used for the task: this is the reason you see the type and not the id.

I did not design or implement the job shop and the asset planning/scheduling part (including routings and tasks) of the component, that is the focus of your post.

Hans, this is a feature not a bug. As you define a task, you want to specify a fixed asset type that is required, not a specific asset. The specific allocation of a fixed asset to a task should be part of the scheduling of the task, and if it's rescheduled the allocation can and maybe should change. Cheers Paul Foxworthy

I guess you refer to something different/more than the functionalities Quartz provides? http://quartz-scheduler.org/ Else, we already discussed that and Quartz has until now been the preferred possible replacement for the current job scheduler. Which BTW works not so bad. If those below offer more (and better, I mean safer), how do you envision to use them? Yeah, Hans is talking about the (complex) task of scheduling manufacturing jobs in order to optimally use assets required to complete the tasks.

I just had a quick look at frepple and I see what this adds to a simple scheduler like Quartz.
