Hi everybody.
What is the status of the WorkEffort application? Is anybody using it at this time? What is it being used for? Ean had mentioned at the conference the idea of building it up so that we can all use it to run our own internal projects with OFBiz. How close are we to that goal? Si, Using OFBiz as a project management system is something we've talked about for a while, actually for a very long time, almost since the beginning of the project. The effort required to build such a system was out of our range to fund (even with our own time) so we have been using other things, currently Jira. There is a lot that we'd like that Jira doesn't handle, such as the separation of requests, requirements, and tasks. And, we'd like to be able to have hierarchical tasks for varying levels of detail over the course of analysis, design and implementation planning. The good news is that the lower level things we need for managing something like OFBiz are very similar to what is needed for more complex managed sales processes, customer service processes, and so on. So, there happens to be some funding for this work and Al Byers is working on "modernizing" some of these things right now. Once that is done there will still be some work required, especially reports and some security things for public versus internal use, etc, and that would just be for the project management. For what Ean was talking about we need even more work put into it to manage larger scale coordination of perhaps hundreds of active projects in the system with thousands of users all participating in coordinated development and outsourcing, etc. We would need to manage information about promised and received funding for different efforts, plus coordinate distribution of those funds based on work done, etc, etc. It would be really cool to have, and would be an enabler for a powerful way of doing things including a level of coordination and sharing that would not be possible without the combination of a shared system like this, and open source projects that provide a common way of doing things. If we had some fairly significant investment this could be pushed forward pretty quickly, but as it stands we are having to be much more creative in how it is funded, including designs that are flexible enough to get funding for whatever we can in the system needed for this through pretty much unrelated paying contracts... The model is proving to be good for sustainable progress, but it is a slow process and not a model that can be accelerated very well. Getting there faster would require a different model/process... -David On Jul 29, 2005, at 11:58 AM, Si Chen wrote: > Hi everybody. > > What is the status of the WorkEffort application? Hi,
I am interested in your reply but I can't see it in your email, below, for some reason (is it an attachment?). Could you try again? It wasn't an attachment or anything, so I'm not sure if I could do anything different, or if this will even go through... If you're having trouble reading it, try the web based archive to read it through your browser... unless someone has some idea... -David On Jul 29, 2005, at 1:30 PM, Nate Reed wrote: > Hi, > > I am interested in your reply but I can't see it in your email, below, > for some reason (is it an attachment?). > > Could you try again? > > Thanks, > Nate > > >> -------- Original Message -------- >> Subject: Re: [OFBiz] Users - status of the WorkEffort application >> From: "David E.
