[jira] Commented: (OFBIZ-2103) Updating Webtool JobList to use PerformFind and FindScreenDecorator

Jacques Le Roux commented on OFBIZ-2103:
----------------------------------------

It seems to work well so far. Something that could be very interesting would be a check box on each line to be able to cancel many jobs at the same time.

Please Bruno,

Don't forget to internationalize your patches, for instance ${uiLabelMap.WebtoolsArtifactInfo} in Menus.xml (which was ok in appheader.ftl). Nevermind, I will do it if I commit the patch.

David E. Jones commented on OFBIZ-2103:
---------------------------------------

No, the changes to the "main" request-map should not be kept. The reason it doesn't take you directly directly to a login screen is so that you can see the message about the default username and password, and to include whatever introductory text we decide to include to help new users (and possibly old users).

So, what is the reason for getting rid of that feature?

Bruno Busco commented on OFBIZ-2103:
------------------------------------

David,
the only reason I did this was for UI consistence with all other applications.
But I am OK with leaving it as you suggest. (Jacques as already prepared such a patch, it is the second last (2009-01-02 03:45 PM)).

On a second thought on that, having the auth="false" on the main request could also be considered as the standard pattern for all applications.
I mean, we already have a login portlet that could be shown on a portal that lets the user to login AND gives some other kind of information.
But, of course, this could be considered a step later, when the portal system will be more stable and defined.

David E. Jones commented on OFBIZ-2103:
---------------------------------------

It's a good way to do things for the webtools webapp, because it is a nice introductory page that is always there, but I disagree with having it in other apps. It would make sense in a "My Portal" sort of application where people go there by default when getting started with OFBiz and some introductory text and possibly links and such is meaningful.

I don't know if this is the best way of doing things, but the problem I have with all of this is you are both arguing based on only one thing: consistency. Consistency is a terrible thing to use as an objective. In fact, it isn't an objective or "end" on its own at all. Consistency is just a tool for reaching an objective, it is a "means to an end". So, what is the goal you are trying to reach with it?

Bruno Busco commented on OFBIZ-2103:
------------------------------------

Of course I agree with you David, consistency is a means to an end. An application could be perfectly consistent but useless.
Of course this will never be the case of OFBiz.

The goal I am trying to reach is to have UI more user friendly, easier to find things, easier to remember how to operate, more room for what is really needed.

Consistency helps user, for example, to know that clicking on a "edit" button he will always be taken to a page where all information related to the item located to THE RIGHT of the edit button will be displayed.
If this function is reached with an "edit" button for an item, clicking on the ID hyperlink for another item, this will get the user life harder and IMO will not give the users a good impression of the product they are using OR EVALUATING.

OFBiz has a great feature that is modularity. Components and applications can be plugged in easily. But, IMO, once they are plugged toghether they should work as a complete unique application. If we do not have strong consistency between applications I think we will end to have a sort of Frankestein application and this will be clearly visible to users.

This link is, of course, not a Bible but can help to explain (not sure it is needed) http://www.ambysoft.com/essays/userInterfaceDesign.html

Thank you,
-Bruno

David E. Jones commented on OFBIZ-2103:
---------------------------------------

You're starting to get at a reason with this:

"The goal I am trying to reach is to have UI more user friendly, easier to find things, easier to remember how to operate, more room for what is really needed."

However, you stopped short of applying it to this question of the main screen, and I'm actually not sure what the rest of it even has to do with the main screen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm big into user interfaces. During my short stint in graduate school that is what I studied. It was the case then, and is perhaps even more the case now, that many recommendations are well meaning but misguided. I use the word misguided on purpose because that's the real problem... if you don't define an objective and then test what is developed against that objective, nothing else really matters and the software won't be usable. Obviously you have to use good practices in order to get close to a good design, but without user testing and such you'll never know if those "good practices" got you there.

There are hundreds of lists like the one you sent a URL to, and they are interesting, but not nearly as useful as the stuff done by (for example) the Nielsen Norman Group (http://www.nngroup.com/). These guys have been around for years and have both produced pretty classic books, and Don Norman's book "The Design of Everyday Things" is a must read for anyone who might find themselves in the uncomfortable position of actually designing something that may be used by real people. In the retail world a book even less related to software, but with excellent practices and patterns, is Why We Buy by Paco Underhill.

Anyway, back to the point... without a purpose/goal defined for a screen you can't design to it. Again, consistency is not the goal but a tool to reach certain goals... so what is the goal for this page?

> Basically the JobList follows now a more recent pattern with usage of PerformFind, Sortable columns and Collapsible FindScreenDecorator.
> I tryed it in a framework-only installation but it should work in a full OFBiz also.
> If this is OK I think I will do a similar job on ServiceList.

Bruno Busco commented on OFBIZ-2103:
------------------------------------

The purpose of the WebTools main page without being logged (I think we are talking about that) is to say to the admin what is the default username and password to access the system.
Of course this page, from day two, when the admin changes his password to go real-world, brings wrong information.

Moreover the admin, to access this information, should already know the full URL http://localhost:8080/webtools otherwise he will never get a clean page to read. So it must have read somewhere this information and the default password could also be written there.

So, to be sincere, I cannot see a valid goal for this page, sorry.

Bruno,

Yes I agree, and then WebtoolsViewPermissionError make more sense than WebtoolsMessage14. BTW all this message should be better in WebtoolsErrorUiLabels.xml

Bilgin Ibryam commented on OFBIZ-2103:
--------------------------------------

I think there should always be one page which is accessible for not logged in users and telling them the admin password. This is especially useful for new comers trying OFBiz for the first time. Then for production installation, it should not be a big deal to replace/hide this page.

I agree that webtools main page is not the rightest place for displaying this kind of info, but before we have another page for this purpose(may be in my page or my portal or somewhere else) it is acceptable (for me).
