If you are on this page https://demo-trunk.ofbiz.apache.org:8443/ecommerce/control/newcustomer select USA from the country drop down and it will display all the USA states, similarly it works just fine for Spain but if you try once again with either United Kingdom or France it will show "No States/Provinces exist".

Both UK and France have Counties saved in the datamodel but the form does not lookup in the correct location as they are not defined as State.

I don't know for UK but in France we don't need this information. For addresses we use only the road and it's number (or alike) = address1, possibly some other information = address2 (like Postal Box, etc.), the Postal Code, and finally the City (with some specificities like Cedex, etc.), the country is not used in France but of course needed for international mails. So we never need other information (like COUNTY, COUNTY_CITY, REGION or even COUNTY_SEAT)

Hi Jacques - its not needed per say as long a you capture the post code but its one of those fields that people feel better to fill in just because they are used to and it gives them reassurance the package will be delivered. This issue also affects Ireland as well as their county data is also been added in the same way

I think we could simply include the regions of the countries by extending the entity condition but should we do this? I think of the usability, if this change could confuse people. Otherwise for can't be bad to get as much information from a person as possible ;)

Purely from a British view point, the page does not work as expected as we would expect to be able to select a county.

Perhaps if its more normal for French signup pages not to have a county box then perhaps the fix should be in two parts a) include all counties as well and b) add an option to hide the county box if you dont want/dont need it for your country when that country is selected from the above drop down?

i modified the getAssociatedStateList method. To recursively get all provinces.

It would be great if you check the result.

When we want to hide the country box for specified countries, the developer has to define a list of these countries in the screens which could be interpreted when the country is changed. Not sure if this is an good idea.

It works for France (unwanted) but not for UK (wanted), I guess UK geo miss the relations.

BTW I think we should rather have a list of countries which need the state fields: there are much more countries where it's not needed... Then this field will be hidden in most cases... I think we should define a new geo entity for this list: CountryWithStates: with OOTB Australia, Canada, UK, US, ... what else?

On reflection, I think *your* idea is better!

Geo is a very simple entity, and I'm uncomfortable adding an attribute that is only relevant to Geos of type COUNTRY. Your original idea would keep the Geo entity simple.

Is there another entity trying to emerge, which is not just about which countries use regions in their postal addresses, but also what else makes a valid postal address. Such as:

- Where should the postcode/zip code be placed in the address?
- What format should a valid postcode have?

BJ suggested an entity to validate postal addresses in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-100. I would suggest PostalAddressFormat as a name. See also https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-203.

For data entry, we could define a view that brings together each Geo of type COUNTRY and its associated PostalAddressFormat, if one exists. That would give the effect of the Geo with the boolean flag in a more general and extensible way.

Hey Jacques,

i had a second look to this issue.

The Reason why we doesn't get the state List for UK is, that UK is defined as "GroupMember" so we haven't a connection to our Regions. It works great when you try (i.e.) England. So we should discuss what happen to those which have GroupMember GeoAssocTypeId.

For the second issue i simply created a new entity "CountryWithStates" with the fields GeoId and a boolean ShowStateList. So i did as you suggested.
