ofbiz.org domain and all the infra around it

Tim Ruppert
Looking for thoughts from the community since we're less than two weeks away from removing this server.

Also, what about moving the olddocs.ofbiz.org to ASF infra somewhere so that all of the links don't have to be updated?  Something to think on ....

Cheers,
Ruppert

David you own this officially at this point - but I'd like to know what we should do with this at the end of the month?  The reason is that there are a ton of subdomains, that even if we move over to all being under ofbiz.apache.org or some other hosted infra at apache, we will need to support the rewrites, etc going forward.

I'd love to have everyone weigh in to see what we want to do.  Thoughts?

+1 for moving olddocs.ofbiz.org to ASF infra somewhere (actually saving this somewhere be ASF or else, untill the old tinylinks
issue is resolved) But is this possible? With an export?

What are the remaining resources? From memory:

- build.ofbiz.org
- api.ofbiz.org
- bigfiles.ofbiz.org
- olddocs.ofbiz.org

You're right that there hasn't been much about these... does anyone care?

About olddocs... IMO it's a bad idea to move it over just because some old links inside the wiki itself can be served by it. Over time that content will get more and more stale, and more an more confusing. Let's just update the links as we notice them or as they bother us.

Yes, but for old tinylinks it's not always obvious to know what they represent. There are some of them in OFBiz trunk as well (not
much 50+). And it's not very good for newcomers. If we could change them in one shoot it would be great but we have to know where
they point to.
Also I must admit I have no time to put  in this at the moment

These are movie files and other big files linked to from docs.ofbiz.org, now cwiki.ofbiz.org (like the Framework Introduction videos).

Yes, exactly... which is one reason I like URLs with more information in them, like the space and page name in normal confluence URLs. It's also nice to have an idea about what you're going to get when you go a URL (I personally don't like blink clicking...).

Yes, but those links were supposed to be more portable. Or did I misunderstand at some point and they are only interesting for
emails?
Else I would never have used them outside of emails since they are not easier to get

In my opinion they're not even good for emails. I hate blind clicking, personally.

They were supposed to be a unique identifier for the page so you could get to it even if the name/title of the page changed. However, if the unique identifier didn't transfer over to a new system, maybe it's not even that helpful.

Also, if you go to a page whose name has changed confluence will automatically try to figure out which page you meant, and usually does a good job of helping you find the page.

For internal links, ie to another part page in confluence, it's really silly to use the external short links when you can refer internally to the pages by name, and confluence will update those links whenever names change.

The introduction vidoes could be moved to youtube or another video
service and then embedded into a wiki page. Maybe some other big files
are candidates for this approach like PDF's or presentations?

I did not well expressed myself. I thought they were more portable because, as you say below "They were supposed to be a unique
identifier for the page so you could get to it even if the name/title of the page changed"

In case there is  http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/x/ at the head of the link it's not so blind and sometimes convenient. Look for
instance at those awfull permalinks Jira generates! Anyway it's just my opinion ;o)

So true :/

Yes this a nice (optionnal) feature

I totally agree! [my page|SPACE:my page title] is the better solution internally, for sure! SPACE:my page title being optionnal if
you are in the same space then [my page title] is enough. Anyway this is well described and handy in Confluence when you edit.

The other thing to remember is that I don't think that the demo.ofbiz.org, demo40.ofbiz.org, and demo904.ofbiz.org - but I think the rest of those are good to go.

When these (the bigfiles) were put together the video quality on both youtube and google was just too low to be usable (ie you couldn't tell what was on the screens, and these are mostly screen recordings with voice-over).

It might be interesting to try now with the youtube "HD" ones. I'm in a bandwidth challenged situation right now, so I can't do this, but if someone wanted to try please go for it!

The main place these files are used (AFAIK) is from this page:

Hi Jeroen,

Just had a quick look (not much time for the moment). Yes, Vimeo sounds like an good alternative indeed

Re: ofbiz.org domain and all the infra around it

Tim Ruppert
In reply to this post by Tim Ruppert
Alright, just wanted to raise this up again to anyone working with the infra team at the ASF - I'm still not sure that we have a working duplicate of what Contegix and HotWax have been hosting for years.  Here's the checklist if anyone's interested:

1. docs.ofbiz.org - migrated, but still dependent at some level of the old backup at olddocs.ofbiz.org
2. demo.ofbiz.org - not migrated
3. demo40.ofbiz.org - not migrated
4. demo904.ofbiz.org - not migrated
5. api.ofbiz.org - migrated?
6. build.ofbiz.org (I think this is close)
7. log.ofbiz.org - not migrated until 2, 3, and 4 are migrated
8. olddocs.ofbiz.org - not migrated
9. bigfiles.ofbiz.org - not migrated
10. anything else?

We're now over the XMas holiday here and there are only 9 days left on this server.  Please speak up on which portions are going to be a huge problem or please step up and help to migrate this stuff off because I don't want OFBiz to turn into a pumpkin because we didn't have people acting - we've been talking about it for six weeks now ....

Cheers,
Ruppert

Re: ofbiz.org domain and all the infra around it

Ean Schuessler
We can spin up support for the demo, demo40 and demo904 servers on our
hardware if there is a danger that its going to go down. Is Apache
providing us hosting infrastructure for it? What vendor hosts Apache's
infrastructure? Does the ASF own its own facilities? That seems
far-fetched. Is there a reason that Contegix cannot get "preferred
vendor" status for ASF?

I updated and restarted the ofbiz system on the apache infra.
There is however only 500M so can only run one version.
you can try: http://ofbiz-vm.apache.org/ecommerce/
https needs to be setup, can do that too this week .
Do we really need all versions as a demo?

i can spend time keeping these installations going.

Hans

Re: ofbiz.org domain and all the infra around it

Tim Ruppert
This is great Hans - thanks so much for doing this.  What I would recommend is spinning up at least one more demo if we wanted to limit it - for the current release branch - especially since we'd like for people to be able to see the differences.  I wish that we could up the amount of memory, but that's ok :)  I guess now we're seeing some of the issues with moving over - but such is life.

Cheers,
Ruppert

Re: ofbiz.org domain and all the infra around it

Anytime that you would spend getting it up and running on BF hardware would be MUCH better spent working with ASF infra on the current zone that we have and getting that running there.  There's no danger of things evaporating, but it would sure be nice that moving this stuff towards the ASF infra that everyone clamored for having it - so that I know when my spend goes away!  It's all there - now what - that's my question to everyone that wanted it there?

Jacques and I worked with Gavin to get this stuff set up originally and Hans obviously is making things happen with the zone (thank you!) - but I'd love it if we could break this stuff up and start to tackle it.  So, who's ready and what would you like to do to make this migrate to the ASF?  If we need to keep this up for another month, I'm fine - but I just need to know that people are committed to helping make this migrate ASAP.

Cheers,
Ruppert

What vendor hosts Apache's infrastructure? Does the ASF own its own facilities? That seems far-fetched. Is there a reason that Contegix cannot get "preferred vendor" status for ASF?
