Just brought up a Red Hat server ver 5.
everthing was going well till I went to add postgresql. got a message: Loading "security" plugin Loading "rhnplugin" plugin This system is not registered with RHN. RHN support will be disabled. so it did not allow Postgresql to be loaded. Wait postgresql is open source. Sheeeesh. Now I can see if it is something the Red hat created but most all the open source programs I could not load. never got to loading JDK Wonder if Sun is getting ready to implement something similar. Shades of Microsoft and IBM Shudder. |

+1.
CentOS is very good community driven Enterprise Unix based OS & I am very big fan of this. I used it for around 2 years. And I really appreciate its stability. Postgres, Mysql can be easily installed in it. -- Ashish On Sat, Apr 18, 2009 at 10:49 AM, Mustansar Mehmood <[hidden email]>wrote: > > try > http://www.centos.org/ > > > BJ Freeman wrote: > >> Just brought up a Red Hat server ver 5. >> everthing was going well till I went to add postgresql. >> got a message: >> Loading "security" plugin >> Loading "rhnplugin" plugin >> This system is not registered with RHN. >> RHN support will be disabled. >> >> so it did not allow Postgresql to be loaded. >> >> Wait postgresql is open source. >> Sheeeesh. >> Now I can see if it is something the Red hat created but most all the >> open source programs I could not load. >> never got to loading JDK >> Wonder if Sun is getting ready to implement something similar. >> Shades of Microsoft and IBM >> Shudder. >> >> >> > > |

Ubuntu is another good Alternate BJ. (And I am using it since last 6 months)
But here again I will prefer to go with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I tried both (Ubuntu 8.04 & Ubuntu 8.10) and found 8.04 more stable with long term support till 2011. -- Ashish On Sat, Apr 18, 2009 at 10:56 AM, BJ Freeman <[hidden email]> wrote: > thanks I am hoping they will install unbuntu > > Mustansar Mehmood sent the following on 4/17/2009 10:19 PM: > > > > try > > http://www.centos.org/ > > > > BJ Freeman wrote: > >> Just brought up a Red Hat server ver 5. > >> everthing was going well till I went to add postgresql. > >> got a message: > >> Loading "security" plugin > >> Loading "rhnplugin" plugin > >> This system is not registered with RHN. > >> RHN support will be disabled. > >> > >> so it did not allow Postgresql to be loaded. > >> > >> Wait postgresql is open source. > >> Sheeeesh. > >> Now I can see if it is something the Red hat created but most all the > >> open source programs I could not load. > >> never got to loading JDK > >> Wonder if Sun is getting ready to implement something similar. > >> Shades of Microsoft and IBM > >> Shudder. > >> > >> > > > > > > > |

My other point is what if Sun starts a subscription service like Red Hat. My local servers are GNU lunix with Gnome. Started them before even free
BSD came out. Back then it was on cpm. LOL. But the hosting companies have their favorites, unless i want to send them a complete machine to put in their hosting facility.
