Hi All,
We begin to have more and more unpleasant comments like this one http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBADMIN/Demo+and+Test+Setup+Guide?focusedCommentId=4377#comment-4377 Should we not take them into account one day or another even if our build processes is so simple ? Tough, maybe we could simply explain clearly in this page (and perhaps some other concerned) why we prefer to do it that way ? Jacques |
We already talked about this subject in the past...
in my opinion a very simple (to manage for the community) and effective way of helping new users, with minimal technical knowledge, that just want to quickly taste how OFBiz is setup in their pc, is to provide a weekly (or montly) zipped file of an "svn export" (or a bigger "svn checkout") of the trunk. A small detail after reading the comments in that Confluence page: ant
is no more required to setup OFBiz because we have integrated it into OFBiz. Hi Jacopo,
Thanks for comment, so I would like to try by following http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBADMIN/Release+Plan for trunk and release. I would then put attachments to this page when all would be tested and ok (or maybe create a new specific child page for that). My goal is to have something as easy as possible to reach, even for non-technical persons. I'm afraid that at the moment there are some issues in trunk when running tests (run-tests). I did not test (run-tests) release for a while. I suppose that I will need some efforts from the community. I will let you know about that as soon as I will know. BTW, do wee need tp keep this page http://docs.ofbiz.org/display/OFBADMIN/Apache+OFBiz+Incubating+4.0.0+Test+Snapshot+Release for historical reasons ? I remember suddenly that David has suggested recently that we work on the framework in order to have separated from applications. Should we wait to be in such a state before engaging a release effort ? Any other suggestions/recommandations anyone ? Thanks Jacques PS : Maybe I'm a bit optimistic about all that, so it will depend of my free time... Hi Jacques,
actually, I was not talking about a new release... I was just suggesting to provide some sort of downloadable snapshot of the trunk. Providing a downloadable snapshot is a good Idea. Its light weight
process compared to doing a release. We can get started anytime. Hi Jacopo,
Yes I totally agree. Svn export should be enough. Actually I think I have overestimated my free time in this perspective. The test part may be long sometimes. I'm always too optimistic in the morning ;o). The same could be done for the release 4.0 and a tag put. Or even no tags and simply an update every month for both (weekly seems a bit too much isn'it) ? I could take care of that. Maybe we (the community) could even decide when to do it (slightly change the date) when some interesting changes have been done, or when some will come and we prefer to wait ? The scenario then could be : 1. At every end of month I ask it it's ok to do it 2. If nobody think we should wait a bit I do it. Else a new date could be proposed by consensus. 3. Of course anybody could propose a date before the end of month if he/her think that we should better do it right now (Mmm ... tags could help here) Jacques ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jacopo Cappellato" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, June 01, 2008 4:47 PM Subject: Re: People complaining about a real release > Hi Jacques, > > actually, I was not talking about a new release... Why not have the zip file contain a ready-to-run version of OFBiz? In other words, run the install, then zip it.

Adrian,
Yes good idea, using Potgres I forgot Derby. A bit more work on our side though. Moreover, as we don't know the platform which will be used, we have to add the plugin.jar in base/lib in each. Jacques,
Ant is no longer needed (it is included in OFBiz). I think the readme file should only mention that the JAVA SDK should be installed. +1 for having in the zip files the Derby database already loaded with demo data. In reply to this post by Jacques Le Roux
Do you guys want to have this automated and part of the nightly build
so that it's easy and done as part of the demo deployment every night? We can just post it at http://demo.hotwaxmedia.com/ . . . / nightlybuild.zip - and then keep a certain amount around for a certain amount of time. If anyone's interested - I'd be happy to set it up. Jacques, let me know your thoughts on this. Hi Tim,
Thank you for the proposition. Yes this would be great. As we will not check tests it can be automated without worries. Keeping some revisions aroud could be helpful in certain cases, good idea. I forgot something to put at least in the trunk README file: a warning explaining that it's not thoroughly tested... So to resume the process : 1. Svn export 2. Add plugin.jar in framewrok/base/lib 3. Ant run-install 4. Update README file with the revision number (optional ?) 5. Zip (or tar.gz, etc. but I guess zip is easier for Windows users I guess and is no pb for Linux guys) 6. Copy on a directory with a revolving number of instances The README file could be <<To run OFBiz please use this simple sequence: 1. Depending of your platform, launch OFBiz using startofbiz.bat or startofbiz.sh 2. Give OFBiz a minute or two to start up... 3. Browse to ERP : https://localhost:8443/catalog/control/main (login/pwd are ofbiz/admin) Ecommerce application : http://localhost:8080/ecommerce/control/main (when checking out you may use as login/pwd DemoCustomer/ofbiz) Enjoy Warning : this OFBiz release has not been thoroughly tested and you may encouter bugs, please refer to user ML in such case : [hidden email], thanks. >> Cheers Jacques From: "Tim Ruppert" <[hidden email]> > Do you guys want to have this automated and part of the nightly build so that it's easy and done as part of the demo deployment > every night?
